Dual Boot Fedora Linux and WinXP
Installing both OS on one system (Fedora Core 5)

Requirements

  • A Computer running MS Windows
  • Fedora 5 installation media
  • Partition Expert or similar application which can resize partitions

A. Resizing the Windows Primary Partition

  1. Start the computer, booting to the Partition Expert disk
  2. When Partition Expert is loaded, select manual mode then click OK
  3. Right-click on the hard drive/partition you wish to modify and click Resize
  4. Resize the partition to the required size (i.e. 20GB), then click OK
  5. Leave the area for the Linux install as free space
  6. Eject the Partition Expert disk
  7. Click on the red X to close Partition Expert. Click on YES to apply changes
  8. With the Partition Expert disc now removed, the system will then attempt to boot to the next available drive..allow Windows to start to make sure it's still working

B. Installing Fedora Linux

  1. Insert the Fedora installation disc, restart the computer and boot locally
  2. When Fedora boots, click ENTER
  3. When the CD window comes up to check the disc media, click on SKIP
  4. When the window comes up with the Fedora background click NEXT
  5. Under Language, select English then NEXT
  6. Under keyboard select U.S. English the click NEXT
  7. Under the drop down box, select create custom layout then click NEXT
  8. Click new, then under mount point put a forward slash / and under size, make it 10,000 MB and click the check box the say force to be primary partition. Then click OK
  9. Click new again and then under File System Type select swap and under size make it 1024 and click OK and then click NEXT
  10. On the next window, click on the other under Label and click on edit. In the new window under label, type winxp then click OK (select either the Fedora Core option or the Windows option as the default boot OS under the check box, then click NEXT
  11. At the next window, leave DHCP as dynamic but change the Hostname to something unique (short name, no gaps or weird characters) then click NEXT
  12. Select were we are (i.e. Tasmania) then click NEXT
  13. Type in your root password (i.e. 123456) (must be at least 6 symbols; don't forget what it is) then click NEXT
  14. On the next window, make sure Office and Productivity are checked and down the bottom of the page select CUSTOMIZE NOW
  15. Under Desktop Environments, select KDE and unselect GNOME
  16. Under Servers, go down to the bottom and select Windows File server and then click NEXT
  17. Now a new screen will appear. Click NEXT and the install will start (can take around 20 mins)
  18. When the install is completed, the installation media will automatically eject. Remove the disc, close the draw and click on REBOOT
  19. When the initial Linux boot is complete, click FORWARD, accept the licence agreement and then click FORWARD again
  20. Disable the firewall, then click FORWARD and click on YES. Then click on FORWARD and FORWARD again
  21. Create a system user with appropriate username, full name and passwords. Click FORWARD
  22. Next, test the sound by clicking on the play button and finally click on FINISH
  23. Note the new Fedora dual-boot screen only lasts for 2 seconds by default. Hit ENTER as soon as you see it and select your preferred OS. Otherwise it will boot automatically to the default OS
  24. Once booted into Fedora Core, login in as root with root's password
