Boot to the installation CD
Sysintall Main Menu
- Highlight Custom (Begin a custom installation (for experts) and press Enter
Choose Custom Installation Options
Partition
- Highlight 3 Partition (Allocate disk space for FreeBSD) and press Enter
- Press 'Z' twice to display disk space in MB
- Move cursor to highlight existing slices (partitions) and press 'D' to delete
- Delete all existing slices
- Press 'A' to use entire disk for FreeBSD install
- Press 'Q' to finish
- You will then be asked to choose a Boot Manager for drive ad0?
- Highlight Standard (Install a standard MBR ([no boot manager]) and press Enter
Label
- Highlight 4 Label (Label allocated disk partitions) and press Enter
- Press 'C' to create a partition
- You will then be asked to specify the partition size
- Delete all existing numbers and type 256M and press Enter
- You will then be asked to choose a partition type
- Highlight Swap (A swap partition) and press Enter
- Press 'C' to create another partition
- Again you will be asked to specify the partition size
- Leave numbers as is and press Enter
- Again you will be asked to choose a partition type
- Highlight FS (A file system) and press Enter
- You will then be asked to specify a mount point for the partition
- Type / (yes, just /) and press Enter
- Press 'Q' to finish
Distributions
- Highlight 5 Distributions (Select distribution(s) to extract) and press Enter
- Highlight 8 User (average user - binaries and doc only) and press Enter
- You will then be prompted if you would like to install the FreeBSD ports collection?
- Highlight 'Yes' and press Enter
- Highlight X Exit (Exit this menu [returning to previous]) and press Enter
Media
- Highlight 6 Media (Choose the installation media type) and press Enter
- Make sure that you have the 1st FreeBSD CD in the CDROM
- Highlight 1 CD/DVD (Install from a FreeBSD CD/DVD) and press Enter
Commit
- Highlight 7 Commit (Perform and pending Partition/Label/Extract actions) and press Enter
- Last Chance! Are you SURE you want to continue the installation?
- Highlight Yes and press Enter
- After several minutes you will be asked to visit the general configuration menu for a chance
to set any last options
- Highlight Yes and press Enter
FreeBSD Configuration Menu
Root Password
- Highlight Root Password (Set the system manager's password) and press Enter
- You will be prompted to enter a new password
- Type Root's password and press Enter
- You will be prompted to retype new password
- Retype Root's password and press Enter
Time Zone
- Highlight Time Zone (Set which time zone you're in) and press Enter
- You will be asked if the machine's CMOS clock is set to UTC
- Highlight No and press Enter
- You will be prompted to select a region
- Highlight Australia and press Enter
- You will be prompted to select an Australian Time Zone
- Highlight Tasmania and press Enter
- You will be prompted does the abbreviation 'EST' look reasonable
- Highlight Yes and press Enter
Networking
- Highlight Networking (Configure additional network services) and press Enter
- Highlight Interfaces (Configure additional network interfaces) and press Enter
- Highlight your network card and press Enter
- You will be prompted do you want to try IPv6 configuration of the interface
- Highlight No and press Enter
- You will be prompted do you want to try DHCP configuration of the interface
- Highlight No and press Enter
- Enter Host (computer name), Domain or Workgroup, IPv4 Gateway (Gateway IP Address),
Name Server (DNS Server), IPv4 Address (IP Address), and Netmask (Subnet Mask)
- Tab down to OK and press Enter
- You will be prompted would you like to bring the interface up right now
- Highlight Yes and press Enter
- Highlight X Exit (Exit this menu [returning to previous]) and press Enter
Finishing Up
- Highlight X Exit (Exit this menu [returning to previous]) and press Enter
- Highlight X Exit (Exit this menu [returning to previous]) and press Enter
- Highlight X Exit Install and press Enter
- You will be prompted are you sure you wish to exit
- Make sure you have removed all floppies, CDs, DVDs
- Press notice that the non-smoking sign is lit, return to your seats and fasten your
seat belts
- Make sure that all cabin luggage is safely secured under the seat in front of you or
in your overhead locker
- Highlight Yes and press Enter
- The box will then reboot itself (this may take a little time so be patient) and before
you know it, you will be looking at a login prompt..
