OK so you've installed IMAP onto the Unix box, which allows you to pull emails from the Unix server onto your workstation. Much easier than having to log into the Unix box every time you need to check your mail, eh?

Note that this system isn't configured to send emails, only to get them from the Unix server onto another workstation.

Also note that you cannot pull root's emails using this system. The trick here is to get the Unix Server to send root's email to another user. See Email, Redirecting.

Firstly, log into the server and send a test message or two to yourself.

Next go to your workstation and fire up your email application of choice. The following basic information which is common to all email applications..
  • Your name - a general user identifier for that account
  • Email address - the full username@servername
  • Username - the login name for the server; this is the account the emails will be sent to
  • Password - the password for the above account
  • SMTP Server or Outgoing Server - the Unix server host name (or IP Address)
  • POP3 Server or Incoming Server - the Unix server host name (or IP Address)
Note that although we're using IMAP, we select POP3 or POP as the email prog's email type, if asked.
